Analytics @ MAS

Analytics is the science of finding patterns in data to aid decision making. It is an interdisciplinary field that is rooted in applied mathematics, with a wide range of applications in business, finance, and industry. Modern businesses are turning toward increasingly sophisticated analytics methods to offer improved shopping suggestions to consumers, target previously-neglected markets, and improve the efficiency of their internal logistical processes and workflows.

In the services sector, the rapid rise of middle class consumers and dynamic enterprises in Asia is boosting demand for modern, high value services. Our companies, particularly in the professional services industries, are well positioned to ride this wave. Data analytics is one such industry cluster that we are developing.

The Division of Mathematical Sciences offers two avenues of study for students interested in delving into this important new field:

  • In our BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences programme, we offer students the opportunity to pursue a Business Analytics Track. In this study track, students will supplement their rigorous mathematical training with courses in taught by the Nanyang Business School (NBS), such as Business Operations and Processes, Management, Financial Service Processes and Analytics, and Database Designing & Development. Students can also read related courses from the School of Computer Science and Engineering, such as Machine Learning and Advanced Data Management.
  • We offer a Master of Science (MSc) in Analytics programme, in which graduates can take advanced courses to learn cutting-edge data science techniques for solving business challenges, including Time Series Analysis, Data Mining, Stochastic Modelling, Financial and Risk Analytics, and more. The MSc programme also features seminars from leading industry experts, as well as a practicum (internship) for students to apply their skills to real-world problems.

For more information about how analytics is used to drive better business decisions, see Analytics Magazine (, a free digital magazine published by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).
