Physics and Applied Physics

Message from the head

Welcome to the Division of Physics and Applied Physics.

Established in 2005, the Division of Physics and Applied Physics (PAP) has since experienced a rapid growth to become a world-class centre for research and education in physics with over 30 faculty members, 12 support staff, 60 research staff, 100 graduate students, and 320 undergraduate students.

Our aim is to build a vibrant community of physicists, with faculty and students as partners in a mutually-enriching education process, immersed in learning and discovery. Our Direct Honours academic programme provides undergraduates with a solid foundation for understanding physical phenomena, and is augmented by optional courses that highlight the frontiers of physics research and their role in the latest technological developments.

Today, we have a young and dynamic team of faculty members with diverse educational background from top-notch universities over the world, dedicated to both teaching and research. Our major research areas include Condensed Matter Physics, Optics and Spectroscopy, Soft Condensed Matter and Biophysics, Ultracold Matter and Quantum Technology, and Theoretical and Computational Physics. The Division has been highly successful in attracting competitive research funding, which has contributed to establishment of state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and research centres.

Our faculty members have won numerous prestigious awards for teaching and research. We have many publications with high citations in top scientific journals, including Nature, Science, Physical Review Letters, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, and more. Most of our graduates find a job within 6 months after graduation. Some have gone on to postgraduate studies in top universities, including Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley, and Imperial College London.

I wish you a rewarding and exciting time with us.

Professor PHAN Anh Tuân
