Professor K. K. Phua, founder of World Scientific Publishing.
World Scientific Publishing, a scientific publishing company based in Singapore, has established a series of undergraduates prizes for top performing students in their first and second year of study in the Division of Physics and Applied Physics at Nanyang Technological University's School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Beginning in 2020, two of these World Scientific Prizes in Physics and Applied Physics will be awarded to the best student in the theoretical courses of the first year and the second year. An additional two will be awarded to the best student in experimental work performed in the first and second years, in recognition of the strong hands-on and laboratory-oriented focus of the division’s curriculum.
World Scientific was founded by Professor Phua Kok Khoo, himself a theoretical physicist. For decades, the company has provided generous support for students and science-based community engagement. For example, World Scientific supports students to attend the annual Lindau meetings where students get to meet and engage with Nobel Laureates.
Carrying on in this tradition, the World Scientific Prizes in Physics and Applied Physics are the first set of prizes at NTU established for first and second year physics students, providing an important investment in students at a key juncture in their career.
